The SASP & Native Connections Grants invites you to join a TWO PART art session led by artist and educator at the Sovereign Community School, Theron Wahkinney (Comanche/Kiowa)! You will learn the fundamentals of drawing, good habits for artists, and how to find your own artistic expression. This virtual art session is open to ages 12-24 years old and will be on Thursday, June 24th and July 1st at 6:00 PM CST. The Native Connections & SASP Grants are hosting a summer-long “Culture is Prevention” series featuring new cultural outreach events and activities each week! For Week 4 we are collaborating with the Tribal Opioid Response Grant for a free and virtual class on Thursday, June 17th at 6:00 PM CST via GoToMeeting. In this class you will learn how to make a ribbon medicine wheel facilitated by John Soap, LPC (Absentee Shawnee)!

For Week 3 we are collaborating with the Tribal Opioid Response Grant for a free and virtual class on Thursday, June 10th at 6:00 PM CST via GoToMeeting. In this class you will learn how to make a beaded wristlet facilitated by our very own Native Connections Grant Coordinator, Angela Gonzalez!

 

Native Youth Preventing Diabetes (NYPD) will be hosting a 2021 Virtual NYPD Camp. Camp may look a little different again this year but we are still working on improving the health of our Native Youth with a week-long education series! We will be discussing diabetes prevention, nutrition education, physical activity, COVID-19 information from a provider in Oklahoma working with our youth and much more.

The second week’s event will be a free and virtual class on Thursday, June 3rd at 7:00 PM CST via GoToMeeting. In this class you will learn how to make a beaded medallion facilitated by Choctaw & Cheyenne and Arapaho artist, Asa Samuels.

The first week’s event will be a free and virtual class on Thursday, May 27th at 6:00 PM CST via GoToMeeting. In this class you will learn how to make a beaded keychain facilitated by Comanche artist, Josh DeBartolo.

 

Today, May 25th at 7PM CST the Absentee Shawnee Tribe’s Native Connections Grant will help facilitate a virtual event with Pulitzer Prize finalist and Cheyenne and Arapaho author, Tommy Orange, hosted by the Jacobson House Quarantine Diaries.

We will go live for an evening with Tommy Orange via The Jacobson House’s FB live and Zoom.

Join the Native Connections & SASP Grants in a free and virtual scavenger hunt for SAMHSA’s National Prevention Week happening May 9-15, 2021. To participate simply download the GooseChase App on your phone, enter the game code, and complete missions to tally up points for a chance to win prizes! This activity is open to ages 12-24 years old and each participant will receive a free t-shirt simply for participating.
