This position is
located at the Absentee Shawnee Tribal Clinic in Shawnee, Oklahoma. The
facility provides primary care in free-standing ambulatory setting to
citizens of the Absentee Shawnee Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma, Medicaid
eligible persons, and employees of the Absentee Shawnee tribal
government and programs. Clinic staff members provide primary
therapeutic and preventative medical care for these beneficiaries. The
Staff Physician works within the defined scope of services provided at
the clinic, oversees the clinical staff, provides day-to-day supervision
of the clinical and technical staff, and collaborates with the clinic
coordinator to ensure the administrative support employees, physical
plant, and medical equipment adequately support the clinical staff.
Responsibilities
- Maintain Controlled Substance Registration Certification with the US Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Control to prescribe and administer Schedule 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4, and 5 narcotics;
- Performs and/or orders diagnostic investigations and studies including laboratory and imaging tests. Interprets and evaluates test results discriminating between normal and abnormal findings to identify the presence of disease and/or disability.
- Formulates, implements, and administers treatment plans in a manner which optimizes patient participation in the care plan. Performs minor in-patient procedures consistent with training, competency, and privileging. Oversees patient adherence to medical and nursing regimens for stable chronically ill patients and adjusts treatment plans and protocols to maximize the patient's quality of life and ability to perform activities of daily living.
- Establishes and maintains contact with patients' care givers and family members to provide health education and training, and counseling.
- Conducts and documents in-service training on topics of interest for other members of the clinical and administrative support staffs as needed. Trains other clinicians on the use of medical devices and equipment employed at the clinic.
- Serves as primary supervisory physician for physician assistants and nurse practitioners employed by the tribe.
- The incumbent is appointed by the Tribe’s Health Board of Directors and performs under the general supervision of the Medical Director of the Tribal Health Programs.
- Attend continuing medical education courses deemed appropriate for the physician’s specialty by the American Medical Association, Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, and other widely-recognized professional medical organizations.
- Performs emergency services and life sustaining measures to stabilize patients in need of emergent care prior to transporting to a local emergency department.
- Identifies, diagnoses, and manages specific illnesses and disease processes.
- Arranges referrals to inpatient facilities, specialty care providers, community health nurses, and home health practitioners for patients requiring care or treatment beyond the scope of practice at the clinic.
- Performs physical examinations utilizing techniques of observation, analysis of patient history, inspection, auscultation, percussion, palpation. Employs diagnostic instruments as required.
Qualifications:
- Be capable of meeting the physical and mental demands of the position i.e. extended periods of standing, subject to frequent interruptions, long, irregular hours, subject to pressures associated with dealing with the seriously ill and their family members, and constant exposure to infectious illness and disease
- Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check.
- If a graduate of a foreign medical school, be certified by and pass the examinations administered by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates;
- Insurable by Physicians' Liability Insurance Company of Oklahoma for professional liability coverage in amounts deemed prudent and by the tribe;
- Be graduate of an accredited medical school (M.D. or D.O.) and be licensed to practice medicine in the state of Oklahoma;
- Must be able to attend continuing medical education courses deemed appropriate for dentists by local, state, and nation professional organizations including the American Medical Association; be capable of meeting the physical and mental demands of the position i.e. extended periods of standing; frequent interruptions; long, irregular hours; and the pressures and demand of dealing with ill and injured and their family members.
- Be a graduate of an accredited medical school and be licensed as a physician/medical doctor; be certified/licensed by the US Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Control to prescribe and administer Schedule 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4, and 5 drugs;
- Be board certified or eligible for board certification by a recognized board organization;
